ducation and life-long learning are a vital component of any community. Athens and Limestone County have broad educational opportunities that allow residents to reach their full potential from pre-school through a baccalaureate degree.
The area is represented by two school systems Athens City Schools and Limestone County Schools. Each system has earned a solid reputation for academic excellence. Student test scores are above the state average and always compare well to national averages. Dedicated teachers and staff combined with involved parents and a supportive community, contribute to the success achieved by our students.
Partnership in Education Programs with local businesses and active Parent-Teacher Organizations are integral components of our successful school climate. Additionally, our schools offer a full range of extracurricular activities including academic clubs, athletics, and music.
Calhoun Community College is located in South Limestone County and offers a variety of associate’s degrees and technical education programs. Approximately 9,000 students attend Calhoun, which offers a strong general education program for students who wish to transfer to a university to complete their bachelor’s degree.
Athens State University is a two-year university offering the junior and senior years of instruction toward a baccalaureate degree. The University enrolls approximately 2,700 students annually. The University offers 33 different majors focused on education, business, and the arts and sciences. Approximately 75 percent of Athens State students work full or part-time. The University accommodates students through a flexible schedule that allows courses to be taught during the day, evening, weekends and through the Internet.

| Limestone County can offer you a variety of affordable housing. There are numerous subdivisions currently under development and 11 other subdivisions in various stages of the approval process.
You may choose to live in Mooresville, one of Alabama’s oldest cities, with its antebellum ambiance or in one of Limestone County’s other four incorporated cities which are Athens, Ardmore, Elkmont, and Lester. The East Limestone area is unincorporated and one of the fastest growing areas. Commuting to the Research Park area of Huntsville including Redstone Arsenal will range from 15 minutes in the Eastern part of the county to 45 minutes in the Western part.
Currently there are 400 homes listed on the multiple listing services. The price range is from $100,000 to $750,000 with square foot pricing of $55.00 to $125.00. You may choose to live in a new up-scale subdivision, golf course subdivisions, water front sub-divisions or mini-farms. Over 200 building lots are available. A partial list includes Cumberland Place, Eagle Point, Stallion Chase, Mill Creek, Plantation East, Southern Breeze, Forest Hills, and Canebrake Club.
Rental property consists of approximately 40 homes with rent ranging from $400.00 to $750.00 per month. There are approximately 12 apartment complexes ranging from $350.00 to $575.00 per month.
The State of Alabama’s property taxes are among the lowest in the nation. In Limestone County property taxes will range from $2.85 to $3.85 per $1000.00 of value.
