Attractions
Limestone County has much to offer each year for the education and entertainment of juniors, seniors and the entire family. Just a few of the events, festivals and attractions are listed below.

Dogwood Festival: This annual festival is held in April of each year and features Kid’s Day In The Park as well as many other activities that occur throughout the month.

Homespun: This two-day arts and crafts show, held each spring, features demonstrations and exhibits of pioneer skills, live music and a working antique gristmill.

Musical Explosion: Two weekends each spring, professional entertainers join with a selection of local and regional performers to offer four days of lively family entertainment.

Historic Mooresville: Take the walking tour during “Olden Days” through this tiny waterfront community incorporated November 16, 1818, one year after the Alabama Territory was created.

Tennessee Valley Old Time Fiddlers Convention: The first full weekend in October, music lovers and musicians from more than 30 states converge on the campus of historic Athens State University for one of the oldest and largest of any similar musical event in the nation.

Alabama Veteran’s Museum and Archives: Housed in an old L & N Railroad freight depot, this museum honors veterans with displays of memorabilia starting with the Revolutionary War.

Limestone County Sheriff’s Rodeo: This rodeo begins in May of each year with a parade and rodeo pageant. The rodeo features bareback riding, steer wrestling, bull riding, roping and more.

Ardmore Renaissance Faire: Walk through the gates to a world of music, history and excitement. Test your skills in the gaming glen or cheer on the competition of dashing knights.

Athens State University: Athens State University is Alabama’s oldest institution of higher learning. The focal point of this beautiful campus, Founders Hall, was built in 1842.


Recreation
Canebrake Glof Club, Athens

Limestone County is blessed with scenic beauty and abundant water. Bordered on the south by the Tennessee River, on the west by the Elk River and decorated with several major streams, Limestone County presents a variety of outdoor activities including golf, boating, water skiing, fishing, hunting, hiking, biking, birding and canoeing.

Bayhill Village and Marina: One of Alabama’s largest inland marinas offers direct access to some of the nation’s best recreation and bass fishing waters. Along with complete wet/dry storage, the resort offers town homes, rustic cabins, a fully developed campground, tennis, miniature golf, swimming pool, picnic areas and hiking.

Athens Sportsplex: The Athens Sportsplex is one of the best municipal athletic facilities in the United States. It includes eight baseball fields and five soccer fields designed for various levels of amateur competition, and the Kids Dugout playground complex and swimming pool.

North Alabama Birding Trail: The well marked trail links some 50 birding sites in 12 counties into a chain of three loops. The central loop features seven sites through south Limestone County landscapes ranging from tupelo swamps to striking fields of wildflowers, towering hardwood forests and vast areas of open backwaters hosting an exciting variety of waterfowl.

Rails to Trails: One of the best-kept secrets in the South, the 10.3-mile trail winds its way past the site of the Battle of Sulfur Creek Trestle. The trail offers a back-to-nature getaway for thousands of local residents and tourists including hikers, bikers, joggers, bird watchers and horseback riders. The entire family can enjoy the beauty and history of this trail.

Golfing, Camping, Hunting and More: A wide variety recreational activities has evolved naturally from Limestone County’s prime location in the Tennessee Valley of North Alabama. The Canebrake Club in Athens, one of five outstanding local golf courses, is among North Alabama’s finest serving as host to professional tournaments.
