 Arab/Marshall County: Area Infrastructure

Located five miles east of Arab on Alabama Highway 69, the Marshall Medical Center North is part of a two-hospital medical system located in Marshall County, Alabama. MMCN is a 90-bed hospital featuring state-of-the-art medical technologies and a dedicated team of specialized and general practice physicians, nurses, technologists, and allied personnel. The medical center features all private rooms and a 24-hour physician staffed emergency medicine department. Along with the City of Arab, the Medical Center provides ambulance service and has access to helicopter MediVac services to larger hospitals in the region.

Healthcare services at Marshall Medical Center North include: Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation, Community Education programs, Day Care, Diabetic Counseling, Diagnostic Services, Emergency Medicine, Family Medicine, Gastroenterology, General Surgery, Diagnostic, Gynecology, Home Health, Internal Medicine, Infectious Disease and Travel Medicine, Mammography, Neurology, Nutrition Counseling, Obstetrics, Ophthalmology, Cardiac Catherization, Oral Surgery, Orthopedics, Otolaryngology (ENT), Pathology, Pediatrics, Physical Therapy, Physicians Referral, Psychiatry, Pulmonology, Radiology, Renal Dialysis, Urology and Wellness programs.

Other facilities for health care in the area include Marshall County Health Department and Marshall-Jackson Mental Health Center. Serving the area are 104 general practitioners and various medical specialists.


Arab lies at the intersection of two major highways, US Highway 231 and Alabama Highway 69. U S Highway 231 is a major divided highway providing an easy 25-minute commute to Redstone Arsenal and Huntsville. Highway 231 connects with Alabama Highway 79 to provide a one-hour commute to Birmingham. Alabama Highway 69 is an east-west connection to Interstate 65 corridor and US Highway 431, another major divided highway connecting to Interstate 20 corridor. This series of highways not only provides an easy commute to Huntsville and Redstone Arsenal, but also provides convenience to the US Interstate system connecting the major cities in the southeast and the nation.

In addition commercial aviation has the use of the Huntsville International Airport (45 miles) and the Birmingham Airport (55 miles) as well as general aviation airport in Guntersville, Albertville, and Cullman.

Emergency Services
Fire station
Arab has a progressively active police department in public service and the prevention of crime. The Arab police department has a force of 27 sworn officers and 7 civilian employees along with 6 RSVP volunteers to serve our city and police jurisdiction. The department consists of four divisions: administrative, patrol, dispatch/jail and investigations. A full line of services is offered including the collection of worthless checks, fugitive warrants, DARE, school resource officer, domestic violence, public relations and victims services to name just a few. Support services include animal control, school crossing guards and park security. Education and training is required of all officers. A regional training facility is located in Arab, staffed with a full time instructor who works to fit into the officer’s schedule. In addition, a tactical team that is recognized throughout the area, is part of the force. There is also specialized traffic investigators, crime scene and evidence technicians prepared to meet the needs of any situation. The bike patrol unit assists in traffic and crowd control situations and also conducts a bicycle safety program in the school system. Special attention is also given to all citizens to ensure their safety and well being. As a result, Arab boasts one of the lowest crime rates in the state of Alabama.

Arab residents are protected by an efficient fire department with a force of 11 full time trained personnel and 23 trained volunteer firemen. The fire-fighting force provides public fire protection through standard fire hydrants owned and maintained by the Arab Water Department. Ongoing efforts to maintain modern equipment and vehicles, and thoroughly trained personnel has assured Arab one of the lowest fire insurance ratings in the county, which in turn lowers homeowners insurance costs.

The City of Arab operates a 24 hour ambulance service for citizens in the city and surrounding areas. EMTs and paramedics are fully trained to provide the best possible health care and most are trained in Advance Life Care procedures. Modern equipment provides a state of the art level for meeting emergency medical needs and all vehicles are equipped with heart monitors. MEDEVAC helicopter emergency unites are available from regional medical centers in nearby Birmingham and Huntsville.


Special Needs Care
A broad range of special needs care exist in Marshall County and the Arab area. These include a variety of assisted-living projects, and a local nursing home with a separate modern, fully-staffed Alzheimer’s disease unit. Residents of Arab are in close proximity to various State offices, including the Marshall County Health Department and the Alabama Department of Human Resources. Facilities associated with the Marshall-Jackson Mental Health Center are also available.

Just west of Arab is the Therapy Plus Center, a 22,000 square foot fitness and rehabilitation center located on the campus of the local hospital Marshall Medical Center-North. Rehabilitation specialties include cardiovascular and pulmonary rehabilitation, stroke recovery, physical therapy, sports injury prevention and rehabilitation and speech therapy.
