Franklin is one of Tennessee's southern tiers of counties and abuts the Alabama border. It has a varied geography, extending from the southeast corner of the Nashville Basin over the Highland Rim and up onto the Cumberland Plateau, for a difference in elevation of about 1300 ft. The county is well watered and forested, and except for the steeper areas of the plateau is well suited for agriculture, having a long growing season and mild winters.
Franklin County is situated in South Central Tennessee on the Alabama Tennessee border. For most of its residents, Huntsville, Alabama lies 22 miles to the southwest of our county border, Chattanooga some 65 miles to the east, Nashville is about 80 miles to the north west, Atlanta, Georgia is 160 miles, Birmingham, Alabama is 110 miles, Memphis, TN is 230 miles and Lexington, Kentucky is 290 miles.
Cities in Franklin County are Winchester (County Seat), Decherd, Estill Springs, Cowan, Huntland, Tullahoma, Monteagle, and the Domain of the University of the South Sewanee.
